Aarya Patil Week 1: Pride in Identity

Identity is an intricate and multivarious idea that best encapsulates the true meaning of who we are. It is influenced by a wide range of factors, such as cultural heritage, individual experiences, interpersonal relationships, and societal expectations. Our identities are what makes each and every one of us unique, however, it can be challenging at times to truly accept who we are, and embrace our culture. My family has always taught me to embrace who we are, and so I have always been proud of my culture, and have done my best to represent it whenever I can.

A couple of weeks ago, I got the opportunity to attend and participate in the Fog India Day Parade through my Boy Scout troop, and I got to see many different kinds of people come together as one to represent our country. However, there were protestors, stationed in several different locations, and I got to see a different perspective on how the world views some people. No matter who you are, or where you come from, there will always be someone who will not appreciate that you are unique and different. It was eye-opening to see that despite there being so many people gathered to celebrate India in a huge parade, there were still people who did not understand the importance of cultural acceptance, and fought people who are proud of their country.

A definition of cultural acceptance is, “...to accept people as they are, with no shaming of their culture or traditions, their clothing, or even their bodies.” It is extremely beneficial and important to have cultural acceptance, as it can enrich our lives in ways that we might not even realize. If we keep hate buried deep in our hearts, we will never truly be happy. It is important to accept those for who they are, as the world will always be unique, and you will meet several people who may not act like you, or even look like you. If we learn how to accept and welcome different cultures, others, and our own lives will be significantly happier.

Your description of cultural acceptance is spot on; it involves accepting individuals for who they are without bias or judgment. We should all work to be more accepting of and understanding of the different backgrounds and identities that make up our community.

  3. Hey Aarya! I found your perspective on cultural identity to be refreshing in the midst of the cultural debates and overall hate in today’s society. The Fog day India parade sounds like an amazing opportunity to explore your heritage, especially considering how vibrant and colorful Indian culture is. Coming to terms with one's cultural identity in an area not native to it is a difficult task. I admire your resilience against the protest and disdain you witnessed, and hope you enjoyed your time regardless.
