Anushka Reddy Week 7: Fashion Icons in America

Throughout its history, America has given birth to an impressive variety of style icons, all of whom have left a lasting impression on the fashion industry. These Hollywood celebrities have had a significant impact on American culture and fashion.

Marilyn Monroe, a famous American actress, model, and singer in the 1950s, was known for playing a "blonde bombshell" character. She soon became a symbol of feminine allure by wearing tight-fitting pieces that flaunted her natural curves. Some of the top trends influenced by Marilyn Monroe were beauty marks, halter tops, and wiggle dresses—dresses that were known as having a waist that was narrower than the hem, which made a woman wiggle when she walked.

Audrey Hepburn is another well-known American-style icon. She gained considerably more notoriety following her performance in "Breakfast at Tiffany's." She popularized the "little black dress" which has been described as one of the iconic pieces of clothing items of the century. Hepburn was known for her timeless, elegant, and simple style.

Lastly, Paris Hilton had a significant impact on fashion in the early 2000s. Most of the Y2K styles and trends are heavily influenced by her. Hilton was just one of many fashion icons who frequently wore tracksuits by companies like Juicy Couture on a regular basis. Paris Hilton also popularized shoulder bags which she consistently wore on her runways

These celebrities, who range from the classic elegance of Hollywood icons like Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe to the vibrant and groundbreaking impact of figures like Paris Hilton, represent a range of aesthetics that have influenced American culture and fashion trends, leaving a lasting mark on the historical runway.

  1. Hey Anushka! I love how unique your topic is, and I think the contribution that these icons have made to American pop culture is pivotal. I have many photos of my family members from the 2000s dressing in the iconic Paris Hilton styles, and it is interesting to see how fashion has both evolved and stayed the same since. When discussing Marilyn Monroe's impact, the vivid descriptions you use, along with including ample examples of her various trademarks helped solidify your claims to a point where I could picture Marilyn Monroe in my head solely from your descriptions. Additionally, you represented a range of figures from different eras which enhanced your overall topic on the tremendous impact these individuals have had on the fashion industry and American society as a whole.

  2. Hi Anushka! I enjoy how you bring awareness on the impact these style icons have on the fashion industry. It’s interesting to know how these famous figures influence American culture and fashion in the fashion industry throughout history. The description of Paris Hilton and how she brought up Y2K styles and trends reminds me of the many Y2K outfits that pop up on social media. There would be many unique outfits of high waisted jeans with laced tops and lavish shoulder bags. It’s interesting how the style still continues in present-day just from Hilton’s walks on the runway. I had always thought these aesthetics just came from Pinterest but it surprises me how it all started from one person. I would definitely recommend elaborating on how these aesthetics became popular over time.
